THE CANTALOUPE CAT

A Picture Book

Written by Jan Yager Illustrated by Mitzi Lyman

Jerry (a cat) likes to eat cantaloupe. The Cantaloupe Cat is a delightful picturebook story that has as its overall message to young readers ages 3 to 7 that every animal and every person is special and unique in their own particular way. Mitzi Lyman’s lovely illustrations are a perfect counterpoint for Jan Yager’s engaging story. The Cantaloupe Cat is further enhanced by a page of suggested questions parents and teachers can explore with children in learning and appreciating what is special about each of them. Highly recommended for school and library picturebook collections.--Midwest Book Review, The Children’s Bookwatch

"The Cantaloupe Cat will delight every child who follows his paw steps, " writes Barbara Shook Hazen, author of more than 50 children’s books including City Cats, County Cats and The Gorilla Did It, about this new children’s book. She continues, "Jan Yager has created the purrfect self-esteem-enhancing pet…. Engaging illustrations and rollicking rhyme add to the fun."

Illustrator Mitzi Lyman, who grew up in Massachusetts, has a degree in human development from University of Massachusetts (Amherst). She has studied painting and drawing at the Arts Student League, the School of Visual Arts, and Corcoran School in Washington, D.C., and has had her own graphics design studio.

Author Jan Yager, who has a Ph.D. in sociology from the City University of New York, and has taught at the elementary and college levels, based the story of The Cantaloupe Cat on her cat Jerry. She previously worked at Macmillan Publishing Company on the revision of the Bank Street Readers.

SUMMARY:

Like Jerry, the cat that likes to eat cantaloupe, every animal and every person is special and unique in some way. The last page of the book has questions for parents or educators to explore with children, such as having a discussion about "Tell me what’s special about you?"
