About Jan Yager’s writing and editing background

Dr. Jan Yager is a sociologist, freelance writer, coach, speaker, artist, and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York.

Jan majored in fine arts at Hofstra University which presented her with the Art Student of the Year award. She has a Ph.D. from The City University of New York Graduate Center and an M.A. in criminal justice from Goddard College.  Jan also did a year of graduate work in art therapy at Hahnemann Medical College and took 3 semester of Writing Nonfiction with Hayes B. Jacobs at the New School as well as editing and publishing courses in the NYU Publishing program.

Jan worked in publishing, first at Macmillan Publishing Company, in the school division, followed by Grove Press, Inc., where for a year she was head of foreign rights, as well as doing acquisitions, publicity, and sales.

In 1996, Jan founded Hannacroix Creek Books, Inc., a small press that publishes nonfiction adult titles, adult fiction, young adult and middle school fiction, illustrated children’s books, dramatic literature, poetry, and journals.

Beginning at the age of 26 with the release of her first nonfiction book, The Vegetable Passion: A History of the Vegetarian State of Mind, published in the U.S. by Scribner’s and in London by Routledge, Jan went on author tours throughout the United States and the United Kingdom. The Vegetable Passion has been translated into Dutch and Vietnamese. Jan’s own small press, Hannacroix Creek Books, Inc., brought out an e-book edition of The Vegetable Passion, with a new introduction, in 2015.

At Penn State, as a Visiting Assistant Professor, Jan taught Writing Nonfiction and Advanced Writing Nonfiction. She is a member of the Authors Guild, Dramatists Guild, American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), Connecticut Press Club, Editorial Freelancers Association, the Women’s Media Group, the Women’s National Book Association, and other professional associations.

Foreign Rights

Directly to publishers, or through her network of foreign co-agents, for her own titles or for the authors of Hannacroix Creek Books, Inc., or a select number of additional client authors, Jan has sold one or multiple titles into 34 languages with more languages in preparation. Her title, When Friendship Hurts (shown below), has sold into 29 languages.
